Goat Lick

It is rare to see goats congregating near rivers in lower elevations, but the allure of minerals does the trick in the area aptly named, “Goat Lick.” Usually goats are visible right across the river, but if none are visible, make sure you look along the rim of the cliffs as well.

A short walk down the paved trail leads to another overlook. Keep an eye out for more goats straight ahead in the cliffs, under the bridge, and on the uphill side of the road. The best viewing season is in the spring.

Trailhead: Look for the obvious, signed turnoff for the Goat Lick just east of Essex on US Highway 2.
