Bogachiel River
Bogachiel River – 11.7mi / 18.8km
Follow the Bogachiel River through one of Olympic’s wonderful, but lesser visited rain forests. The trail starts out in Olympic National Forest and drops 150ft/50m down to Morganroth Creek.
After crossing the creek on a log bridge, you’ll come to a junction with the Ira Spring Wetland Loop Trail (take this option on the way back). Continue on the main trail as it travels through a forest of tall, moss-covered trees and sword ferns shooting up from the forest floor.
You’ll make your way to the river’s edge briefly before ducking back into the rain forest. The Ira Spring trail joins back up before rock-hopping over Kahkwa Creek and entering the national park. The trail continues, mostly level, through a mix of lush rain forest with brief glimpses of the broad river.
Right before Mosquito Creek, the trail steeply climbs up and over a cutbank of the river (with a few ropes for help) before dropping down into aspens and Mosquito Creek. The junction with the Snider-Jackson Trail overlooks the river, and serves as a nice turnaround spot.
Trailhead: Take the Undi Road (across from Bogachiel State Park, 5.5 miles south of Forks) and follow it up to the Undi-Bogachiel Bypass Road. The bypass road rejoins the Undi Road where you’ll follow it to the trailhead near the gate.
