Cathedral Lakes

Cathedral Lakes – 7.3mi / 11.7km

Magnificent mountains tower over flower-filled meadows and beautiful lakes. The trail climbs out of Tuolumne meadows through the trees. The grade eases through a wetter forest before leveling out in a dry section with open views of Medlicott Dome and Cathedral Peak.

Take the spur trail which drops down along the lovely creek and meadows to the lake. The second meadow can be very soggy, but is avoided by following the granite outcropping to the left. Sloping granite lines the lake, and here the views of the lake and Tressider Peak are excellent.

Turn around here or head up to the second, smaller lake which adds another 1.4mi/2.3km to the overall trip. Cathedral Pass is 0.5mi/0.8km past the second lake and features a wonderful meadow with a view of the impressive Matthes Crest.

Trailhead: Park along the Tioga Road at the signed trailhead for Cathedral Lakes in Tuolumne Meadows.
