Upper & Lower Mariposa Grove

Upper & Lower Mariposa – 10.7mi / 17.2km

Explore Yosemite’s largest grove of Giant Sequoias that consists of over 500 of these mature giants. The National Park Service just finished renovating the Mariposa Grove to make the area quieter, and a more natural and healthier environment for these impressive giants.

This network of trails first explores the lower section of the grove including the Grizzly Giant, then heads up through this cathedral of trees interspersed with wetlands. With the removal of the tram, this hike now can be done as a longer and quieter loop. The upper section includes the famous Tunnel Tree, now toppled over, and a nice overlook of the Wawona area at Wawona Point. Explore the network of paths and interpretive signs making the hike as long as you want before heading back down.

Trailhead: Park in the parking area just inside the South Entrance and take the free shuttle to the trailhead. (During non-peak times and seasons, limited parking is available at the end of Mariposa Grove Road.)

Elevation Gain: 1,200ft / 360m – Elevation Loss: 1,200ft / 360m
