It’s that time of year when the longest running citizen science program in the world kicks off! The annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count is in its 115th year and the great thing is, whether or not you’re an experienced birder, you can be a part of it. Head on over to http://www.audubon.org to connect with your local Audubon chapter and get in a survey group.
If you’re an experienced birder, what a perfect excuse to get out and help count the birds you love! If you’re not, however, you may not think you can contribute. The reality is, there is no better time to get involved.
The great thing about events like this is that you get an opportunity to get out into the field with folks that are better birders than you. I constantly go out with better birders than me, and I’m always enhancing my skill set. Not only will your skill set be enhanced, you’ll truly be helpful and contributing. You may not be able to tell the difference between a Song Sparrow or a Fox Sparrow, but being able to count how many are there or notice them, then letting your more experienced members help you with the ID is great!
In past years, there was a $5 signup fee to cover costs, but that has been waived so that more can get involved. It is now covered by donations to Audubon. This is another great way to contribute… especially if you can’t get out and count.
