It’s the holiday season, so I understand if fitness is the furthest thing from your mind at the moment. It’s the time of year when motivation to exercise dwindles, there’s a seemingly endless amount of holiday treats, and health/fitness goals get put on hold until the new year.
But, I want to challenge you to start thinking about your 2024 goals (or resolutions) and formulate an action plan NOW— so you'll be ready to hit the ground running come January 1st!
Plan and create the right physical and mental space for your health/fitness goals.
3 STEPS TO GET YOU STARTED:
- Research what’s required for you to achieve your goal(s).
What training, equipment, or professional assistance/guidance will you need? - Identify any potential barriers/obstacles that might prevent you from completing your goal.
How can you avoid them? Or, how will you solve these issues when they arise? - Make a plan!
Be as specific and detailed as possible.
INSIGHT INTO ACTION When it comes to fitness, Jake and I have different motivational drivers. I'm intrinsically motivated to work out, while Jake's motivation comes primarily from external factors (extrinsic). We do, however, have some shared health/fitness goal(s):
- Increase our “health-span”
- Maintain consistency with working out
- Incorporate specific training for hiking (learn more here)
Jake’s primary exercise barrier: Viewing working out as boring/not enjoyable Solution: 1) "Gamifying" workouts 2) Setting intentions 3) A personalized home gym
My primary exercise barrier: Finding time to work out Solution: 1) A detailed training plan 2) Scheduling workouts in my weekly calendar 3) A home gym set up
HOME GYM ADVANTAGE For us, having a home gym has been very advantageous and allows us to achieve our individual fitness goals. We’ve found this especially true during the winter season here in NW Montana, because the weather conditions can impact how much time we’re able to recreate or exercise outdoors.
Over the past 10 years we’ve lived in 4 different houses and our home gym space has been very different (yet very functional) at each location. Also, we started with a minimal amount of equipment (even making some of it ourselves), and we’ve added or upgraded over the years to better accommodate our needs and space.
Having a space to workout from home has been the most convenient, money-saving, and most flexible option for us to meet our fitness goals. Is it the right option for YOU? Visit my blog to compare the pros and cons of a home gym, PLUS get 6 tips to create a space that you’ll actually use!
In the next email I’ll discuss specific tools and tips that’ll help you create the right mental space for working out, master consistency, and maintain motivation.
Adventure awaits… start planning for it NOW!

P.S. Speaking of holiday food and treats... My Thanksgiving pumpkin pie (if you read my previous email) was very yummy, but definitely not as delicious as the homemade stuffing!
