Five degrees. That's what the car told us the outside temperature was. We had just pulled up to the Polebridge Ranger Station and were planning on skiing out towards Kintla Lake. I had driven out that way this past summer while doing some citizen science and bookmarked it in my mind to come again in winter.
While the ski to Bowman Lake is great, as it gives you a wonderful destination, it's full of ups and downs which make for tricky cross-country skiing for those of us who aren't great at it. The ski through the meadows on the way to Kintla Lake, however, is a lovely, mostly level endeavor.
So we headed out on a crisp Valentine's Day to soak in the sunshine and views on a bluebird day. Aside from the ski tracks in the fresh snow that we followed for the first few hundred yards, the only other tracks were mice, fox, squirrel, moose, and wolverine.
We managed to stay warm (enough) as the sun did its magic heating us up, lighting up the mountains, and sparkling across the snow. Check out the short trip video we put together.
The trail awaits...
