Smokey Bottom Trail
Smokey Bottom Trail – 3.9mi / 6.2km
This forested walk travels above the Elwha River where the old Lake Mills reservoir used to be. The trail works its way along the edge of the old reservoir with occasional views looking down at the now freed Elwha River.
You’ll get pocket views looking back at the canyon where the river is squeezed through the rock canyon and dam remnants remain. The forest is lush and the trees are huge as you travel across small feeder streams all the way to Boulder Creek.
To see Boulder Creek, drop down to the campsite which leads you out of the forest to the creek and sprawling views up and down the river.
Trailhead: Turn onto the Olympic Hot Springs Road from Hwy 101, 9 miles west of Port Angeles. Drive 5.5 miles to the large switchback in the road. Take a left onto the gravel road just past the overlook. The trail starts from the south side of the parking lot at the end of the road.
