Book Review – Dirt Work: An Education in the Woods

Dirt Work

A while back I was sent a copy of “Dirt Work: An Education in the Woods” by Christine Byl. Christine was a former seasonal trail crew member in Glacier National Park, then up in Alaska. The book is written with a raw edge that you’d expect from a trail crew member, but not necessarily a woman. Starting with her intelligence, she blows away your pre-conceived notions of what seasonal laborers are, who they are, and why they do what they do.

The book is broken into parts headlined by a tool for each section. You learn a great deal about trail maintenance and the life of someone who spends summer creating, clearing, and maintaining trails.

If you like a good memoir and want to get some honest behind the scenes stories told in a wonderful way, check out “Dirt Work: An Education in the Woods” by Christine Byl.
