Trapper Lake & Bearpaw Lake
Trapper Lake and Bearpaw Lake – 10mi / 16.1km
This hike lets you explore four unique and beautiful lakes at the foot of the Tetons. Start at the Leigh Lake Trailhead. (Add 0.5mi/0.8km each way along the busy String Lake shoreline by starting at the String Lake Trailhead.)
The level trail follows along the east shores of String Lake and Leigh Lake. (See String Lake and Leigh Lake for description.)
At the head of Leigh Lake, you pass by a recent burn, then enter a large meadow. At the trail junction, a left takes you a short distance to the head of Leigh Lake, which is worth exploring. A right at the junction heads to the campsite at Bearpaw Lake, which has the best vantage along its shoreline.
Return to the junction and follow the sign west towards Trapper Lake and the mountains. The trail travels a short distance through the meadows, then drops down along the opposite side of Bearpaw Lake, past campsite B. You get a few final views of Bearpaw Lake, before traveling through the woods and a few open meadows to Trapper Lake.
Trapper Lake sits below a massive avalanche slide below Mt. Horan. A small beaver pond is located at the inlet to the main lake, and a reedy area borders much of the lake. At this infrequently visited lake, a small knoll serves as a nice quiet spot for a snack. Look for animals in the avalanche chute before heading back.
Trailhead: Turn onto the road heading northwest at the North Jenny Lake Junction and turn right into the String Lake area. Park at the Leigh Lake or String Lake Parking lots.
