Polecat Creek Loop
Polecat Creek Loop – 2.6mi / 4.2km
This dusty trail, used frequently by the horse concessionaire, loops through a lodgepole forest with a brief, but interesting, marsh section along Polecat Creek.
After getting on the trail from the Headwaters Lodge, take a right to follow the loop counterclockwise. The trail travels through lodgepole pines and eventually comes to a junction where it travels on a dirt road. At this junction, take a left to continue on the loop (a right takes you across the highway to the Flagg Canyon Trail).
You walk on the dirt road through a hall of trees with scant meadows, then cross under the power lines. Here the trail returns to a single-track. The forest eventually opens up to a meadow as the trail turns south.
A spur trail heads to the steaming Huckleberry Hot Springs. (Note: It is illegal and dangerous to enter the waters of these hot springs.)
Continue south along the trail where Polecat Creek slows down into ponds and marshy areas. Look for waterfowl and other animals in these waters. You also get a brief view of the Tetons to the south. The trail continues into the trees, past the Huckleberry Hot Springs Trailhead, the campground, and finally back to the lodge.
Trailhead: From the Headwaters Lodge, walk to the north end of the parking lot and find the trail on the other side of the road.
