Walking Going-to-the-Sun Road

Walking Going-to-the-Sun Road

A little sunshine on the face on a bluebird day beckoned my wife and me to Glacier. The Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed at Lake McDonald on the west side, so we walked the clear road to the north end of the lake and walked around McDonald Creek. Check out the link below the video to get an idea of where the plows are and which roads are open!

Hi Jake! Are hikers allowed to walk the Going to the Sun road when it is open to vehicles? I read that the road has narrow shoulders so I was wondering whether people are allowed to walk the road at the same time as vehicles are driving on it.

As far as an official policy, I’m not sure. I don’t believe so… or I wouldn’t do it, especially the sections above the Loop. With traffic, it’s super busy and there is literally no room for a human and traffic. Besides, you’ll want to be on trails anyway. 😀
